20) Presidents Hoover and Roosevelt respond to the Great Depression

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 10 months ago

President Franklin Roosevelt and President Herbert Hoover were more different then they were similar. They both tried to stop the Great Depression. They also were looking for new ways to make America a better social and economical country. President Hoover became unpopular because he was president when the U.S. went into the Great Depression. Franklin Roosevelt became popular because he was the president that got us out of the Great Depression. Hoover was not making a difference. Roosevelt was making a difference because he was pulling the U.S. out of the Great Depression.

Presidential candidate, Herbert Hoover, ran for president in 1928. On September 3, 1929, the New York stocks exchange reached an all time high. Then the exchange went down. On October 23 of the same year, the stocks dropped sharply. This event was called The Crash. The next day thousands of people tried to sell their stocks before they dropped anymore. The heavy selling of the stocks made the value decrease even more. On October 24, a record of 12.9 million stock shares were traded. On October 29, the stock market crashed. This was called the terrible day, or  “Black Tuesday”. The banks closed because there was no money to give out. Many banks went bankrupt because they couldn't carry money. This meant people couldn't withdraw the money in their accounts.

President Herbert Hoover and President Franklin Roosevelt were also very similar. Hoover and Roosevelt were both trying to stop the Great Depression. They were both trying to make America a better place to live, dispite of the Great Depression.

There are many differences between President Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt. One difference was, Franklin Roosevelt was making a difference, and the Americans started to believe in him. As for President Hoover, he was becoming unpopular to the country, and wasn't making a difference. Another difference between President Hoover, and Franklin Roosevelt was, Hoover wasn't coming up with very good ideas to help America become a better place. While Roosevelt was making a big difference. People started making “Hoovervilles” and “Hoover Flags”. Hoovervilles were where many people lived if they lost their homes. They blamed President Hoover. The Hoover Flag was where people turned their pockets inside out to show that they had no money.

Therefore, Franklin Roosevelt and President Hoover had many similarities and differences. Some similarities between the two are, they were both trying to make a difference in America and they were both trying to make America a better place to live. The major differences between the two are Roosevelt was very popular and was making a difference, but Hoover made bad choices and became unpopular. People blamed him for their misfortune.
