16) People move for mainly economic reasons

People mostly move for economic reasons. Some people moved to raise cattle. Some colonies were formed for religious freedom. Other people moved to get land or jobs.

Cattle trade was the main reason why people moved to the west. An Illinois live stock dealer realized that railroads could bring cattle from Texas ranches to Eastern cities. The railroads also brought more population, companies and businesses to the cities and towns. The more businesses, companies, and cattle that were brought to the cities, the more the population increased.  As more people came, the more meat that was needed.

Another economic reason why people moved was lack of work where they came from. People either lost their jobs or there weren't enough jobs to go around. Immigrants needed money so badly that they would take any job they could get. Early in the colonial times they were even indentured servants. The jobs they did get weren't very good, but they needed the money badly. The workers worked long hours, got low wages, and they worked in unsafe working conditions. Many European immigrants who settled in the east found jobs in sweatshops for about $10 a week.

Another reason people moved was they wanted freedom, land of their own, and they wanted adventure. Early in US history people also came for religious reasons. Back in England they had to be one religion. Here they could be any religion. The Quakers  moved to Pennsylvania to be able to practice their religion.

As you can see there were many economic reasons for settling in the colonies. There were also economic reasons to move to the United States after it was a nation. Some people, though, moved for religious reasons.
