15) Imperialism can harm relations between nations

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 10 months ago

Imperialism was bad for the colonies. The parent country had control over the colonies. Britain was our parent country, and they passed laws in which we had no say. England also taxed the colonies too so that they had the money to pay off the war debt. England also made the laws that upset the  colonies. Later, the United States would get colonies and do the same thing. Most colonies resented the parent country's laws and fought for their independence.

Most parent countries took advantages over the colonies. The parent country made the colonies pay taxes on the products sent to them. They chose to do this because they needed to pay of the war debts. The British made taxes on the 13 colonies. The U.S. had to pay taxes on sugar, and molasses and anything shipped to the colonies. This called for some stricter enforcement of the act of more harsh punishment of smugglers. Colonial merchants reacted with anger. Britain also passed the Stamp Act. The stamp Act said that all legal and commercial documents were to be carried a official stamp showing that a tax had been paid. They were being taxed with out their consent.

Britain came up with the Parliament Law. No colonies could settle west of the Appellation Mountains. The British wanted this land to remain in the hands of their Native American allies to prevent another revolt like the Pontiac's Rebellion. Also they didn't want to get in a fight with the Native Americans. The Proclamation angered the colonists who had hoped to move to the fertile Ohio Valley. Some colonists bought land as an investment and it angered them also. Since King George wanted to keep peace with the Native American allies Britain passed the Quartering Act. This meant that colonies had to house British soldiers and provide them with supplies. The colonist had to buy food and drinks for the soldiers.

When we were the United States, we also gave countries problems. We came up with the Big Stick Policy. The Big Stick Policy made the U.S. stronger. This meant " Speak soflty, but carry a big stick". After the Spanish American war we (the USA) told the Philippines they couldn't have their independece. When we asked  Colombia for things, they said no so we interfered with them and the people in Panama got their independence. We wanted to get trading right and other things. We also wanted to make the Panama Canal. We wanted to make it because it would be easier to go through the canal then all around the continent.

In a summary, the parent countries had power over the colonies. The parent countries always took advantedge of the colonies. The parent country made many changes in the colonies. Also most of the colonies fought for their independence.
